FUN FACTS

DID YOU KNOW...

... that young students are "Buddied Up" with older students to form a mentoring and support system that helps bond our student body?

For instance, each First Grader has a Fifth Grade Buddy to do special projects with. They write letters to one another, exchange special messages of encouragement, read stories together, and do art projects.

... that each grade takes turns throughout the year to help present the weekly school Mass?

Even the Kindergarten class takes part! All students in the assigned class take part in the Mass. They present the Bible readings, do the Responses, bring forth the Gifts - just about everything that a Lay Person can do to take part in a Mass service. But done by our school children, instead of by adults. Not only does this boost their feelings of self-confidence and spirituality, but it also gives them valuable experience in public speaking.

... that each month we have a school-wide Assembly where we host a forum for special presenters from outside resources?

Examples of previous Assemblies include visits with:
  • animals and staff from the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium
  • a local Fire Department (and one of their firetrucks) to discuss fire safety
  • staff from the Carnegie Science Center doing fun experiments using students as assistants
  • local animal shelters
... that many of the teachers at St. Bart's are also alumni? That's right. They attended this school, and now they are here to "pay it forward". Miss Begley, Mrs. Eggan, Mrs. McGreal, Mr. Phillips, Mrs. Pricer, and Mrs. Smith - all St. Bart grads.
... that our Spanish language program is so strong that many students test out of their Level One high school Spanish classes? Starting in Kindergarten, our children attend Spanish classes twice a week.
...that every year 8th graders (graduates) place out of their high school freshman year math courses? Here at SBS, PreAlgebra is offered in 7th grade & Algebra in 8th.
... that 8th graders are able to learn about various high schools through school tours and presentations? Typically, these schools include Oakland Catholic, Central Catholic, Mount Alvernia, and North Catholic.
... that we team up with other small Catholic schools to comprise our Bruins football team?

While we might be competitors in other sports, we all pull together for a united football team. Those other schools include St. Bernadette, St. Joseph - Verona, St John the Baptist- Plum, North American Martyrs - Monroeville, Holy Rosary, and Word of God - Swissvale. It's the ultimate in inter-school teamwork.
